Reporting data on the nature and amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in South Africa is essential for:

• updating and maintaining the national greenhouse gas inventory;
• South Africa meeting its reporting obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and instrument treaties to which it is bound; and
• Informing the formulation and implementation of legislation.

Regulations have been promulgated to govern the reporting of data on GHG emissions on the National Atmospheric Emission Inventory System (NAEIS) of the Department of Environmental Affairs (Greenhouse Gas Emission Reporting Regulations, Notice 275 dated 3 April 2017). The Regulations were accompanied by Technical Guidelines for Monitoring, Reporting and Verification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Industry.

The first reports in terms of these regulations were due to be submitted by March 2018. The reported emissions will also inform the organisation’s liability for carbon tax which was implemented with effect from 1 June 2019.

Aim and objectives of this course

The aim of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the GHG Emissions Reporting Regulations and the accompanying Technical Guidelines.

Specific objectives include:

• Develop an insight into the importance of GHG emissions reporting;
• Develop an understanding of the requirements for emissions reporting;
• Develop a grasp of the consequences of non- or under reporting;
• Develop an understanding of the technical guidelines that are applicable to the participant’s sector;
• Develop the skills to draft a GHG emissions report; and
• Develop an understanding of the link with carbon tax.
